Let \(T\) be either the set of positive integers or the set of positive real numbers and let \(I\) be a subinterval of the real line. In this paper, the author studies families \(\{L_t: t\in T\}\) of positive linear operators of the form \[ (L_tf)(x)= \int_I f(y) d\mu_{t,x}(y), \quad (t,x)\in T\times I, \tag{1} \] where \(\{\mu_{t,x}: (t,x)\in T\times I\}\) is a family of probability measures concentrated on \(I\) such that, for each \(x\in I\), \(\mu_{t,x}\) converges weakly to the Dirac measure \(\delta_x\) as \(t\to \infty\) and \(f\) is any real measurable function defined on \(I\) for which the right-hand side of (1) makes sense. In particular the author studies preservation properties of first and second order by such Bernstein operators. For earlier work along these general lines, see \textit{T. Lindvall} [Math. Sci. 7, 127-139 (1982; Zbl 0495.60035)].
