The construction of nonnegativity preserving bivariate \(C^1\) interpolants to scattered data is studied. Sufficient conditions on Bézier ordinates to ensure nonnegativity for a cubic Bézier triangular patch are obtained using an earlier result on nonnegativity in the univariate case [see \textit{T. N. T. Goodman, B. H. Ong}, and \textit{K. Unsworth}, NURBS for curve and surface design, SIAM, Philadelphia, PA, 59-74 (1991; Zbl 0772.41001)]. A local scheme applying these conditions for \(C^1\) nonnegativity preserving scattered data interpolation is described. Some numerical examples are also presented graphically.
