This paper deals with the effects of Hamiltonian perturbation of Hamiltonian systems, in which the perturbation destroys some of the symmetries of the original system. For such a system the author studies the existence and stability of waves. To this end the author uses both Lyapunov-Schmidt theory and the Evans function. The theoretical results are applied to systems describing the propagation of waves in weakly inhomogeneous media.
