The notion of an elliptic root system \(R\) was introduced by \textit{K. Saito} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 21, 75-179 (1985; Zbl 0573.17012); ibid. 26, 15-78 (1990; Zbl 0713.17014)]. It is a generalized root system belonging to a pair \((F,I)\) of a real vector space \(F\) and a positive semidefinite symmetric bilinear form \(I\) on \(F\) whose radical is of dimension 2. Let \(\widehat{F}\) be a real vector space containing \(F\) as a subspace of codimension 2 and \(\widehat{I}\) be a nondegenerate extension of \(I\) on \(\widehat{F}\). The author defines a theta function associated to \((\widehat{F}, \widehat{I})\), and calculates it explicitly in case of \(R= A_1^{(1,1)}\), \(BC_1^{(2,1)}\), and \(BC_1^{(2,4)}\). The argument is based on a careful study of the action of the reflections with respect to \(\widehat{I}\).
