This paper is concerned with problems in which the hyperbolic system depends critically on dissipative and dispersive effects. The jump conditions for undercompressive shocks are obtained when dispersion and dissipation are balanced. Waveforms are constructed from basic shock, fan, compound shock and shock/fan combinations, and comparison with numerical results is presented. Finally a mechanism for the formation of nonclassical shocks from smooth waveforms is presented. It is an interesting piece of work and should be of interest to the workers in the area of conservation laws with nonconvex fluxes.
