By a vertex operator algebra with larger symmetry, the author means a vertex operator algebra whose subspace of invariants under the full automorphism group coincides with the Virasoro submodule generated by the vacuum vector up to a certain degree. The main result of the paper is deriving Norton's trace formula concerning the adjoint action of elements of the Griess algebra from the moonshine vertex operator algebra without using any explicit structures of the Griess algebra of the Monster. The only thing they used is the fact that the moonshine vertex operator algebra has their ``larger symmetry'' of degree~11.
