Localization phenomena in one-dimensional imperfect continuous structures is analyzed by using perturbation method (generalization of WKB method in which the spatial variable appears as a parameter). It is shown that strong localization is due to the turning points in which purely imaginary characteristic exponent assume a non zero real part. Examples are given for both dynamical and statical elastic systems. In particular, the problem of a rod on elastic (Winkler) foundation is studied. It is shown that the structure has nearly-defective matrices, so that their characteristic exponents are highly sensitive to imperfections.
