This paper deals with the problem of generating smooth functions interpolating a prescribed set of data and preserving certain shape properties of the data such as positivity, monotonicity or convexity. The constructed interpolant is a parametric curve. The graph of the curve can be interpreted as the image of a planar curve with cubic components whose shape can be immediately controlled by its Bézier polygon and via tension parameters. The scheme method requires the solution of a tridiagonal linear system. The approximation order is investigated and numerical examples are given. The extension of the method to bivariate tensor product data is currently under study.
