Hopf operads were used by \textit{E. Getzler} and \textit{J. D. S. Jones} [``Operads, homotopy algebra and iterated integrals for double loop spaces'', Preprint (1992)]. An operad induces a monad on the monoidal category involved. The author is thus motivated to define Hopf monads: they are monads in the 2-category of monoidal categories and comonoidal functors. This structure on the monad \(S\) is exactly what is required to lift the monoidal structure from the original category \({\mathcal V}\) to the category \({\mathcal V}^S\) of Eilenberg-Moore algebras for the monad. Comonoids in the monoidal category \({\mathcal V}^S\) equate to algebras for the monad induced by \(S\) on comonoids in \({\mathcal V}\).
