From the authors' abstract: An instability criterion is given for the \(3D\) Prandtl equations, showing that the monotonicity condition on the tangential velocity fields is not sufficient for well-posedness, in contrast to the classical well-posedness theory for the \(2D\) case under Oleinik monotonicity assumption. Both, linear stability and nonlinear stability, are considered. Specifically, the criterion says that the monotonic shear flow is linearly stable for the \(3D\) Prandtl equations if and only if the tangential velocity field direction is invariant with respect to the normal variable.
