Let \(bG\) denote some compactification of a non-locally compact rectifiable space \(G\). A number of results which deduce properties of \(G\) or \(bG\) from properties of the remainder \(bG\setminus G\) are given. For example if the remainder has a locally point-countable \(p\)-metabase and has countable \(\pi\) character then \(bG\) is separable and metrisable; if the remainder has character at most \(\tau\) then \(G\) has character at most \(\tau^+\) and cardinality at most \(2^{\tau^+}\).
