A theorem of \textit{G. A. Elliott} and \textit{D. Kucerovsky} [Pac. J. Math. 198, No. 2, 385--409 (2001; Zbl 1058.46041)] shows that a unital, separable extension with a stable ideal is unitally nuclearly absorbing if and only if the extension is purely large. They also provided a nonunital version of this result. The author reveals a flaw in the proof of the nonunital version, gives a counterexample, and fixes the nonunital version by adding some mild additional assumption. In particular, the nonunital version holds if the quotient is nonunital. Finally, the author examines how this affects results in the classification theory of graph \(C^*\)-algebras.
