The authors study the initial value problem for the Toda lattice in the following class: \[ \| a_n(t) \|_{C[0, T]} \to 0, \quad \| b_n(t) \|_{C[0, T]} \to 0, \quad n \to +\infty, \] \[ \Biggl\| \sum_{n < 0} |n| \{ |a_n(t) - 1| + |b_n(t)|\} \Biggr\|_{C[0, T]} < \infty, \] for all \(T > 0\). The main results are the uniqueness theorem and formulas for the evolution of the scattering data of the corresponding discrete Sturm-Liouville equation. The authors describe the algorithm for the solution of the initial value problem, based on an inverse scattering method.
