The article deals with the boundedness of some maximal operators from Sobolev spaces \(W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)\) to \(L^{p^{*}}(\mathbb{R}^n) \) in the range \(1<p<n\), \(p^{*}=np/(n-p)\). The result concerns a wide range of maximal operators such as the spherical maximal operator or the maximal operator where the averages are taken over boundaries of cubes. This last operator is not bounded in \(L^p\) for any \(p\). As an application, a result about the size of Lebesgue points of a function in Sobolev spaces is provided.
