The paper of \textit{J. Kustermans} and \textit{S. Vaes} [``The operator algebra approach to quantum groups'', Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 97, No.~2, 547--552 (2000; Zbl 0978.46044)] created the need to produce an explicit example of a \(C^*\)-algebra endowed with comultiplication having a counit and antipode. The aim of this paper is to produce such a \(C^*\)-algebra, called a Hopf \(C^*\)-algebra. In this self-contained paper, the author begins his search for such a \(C^*\)-algebra by considering the Burchnall-Chaundy algebra. This algebra is a commutative algebra of formal pseudo-differential operators that can generate Lax pairs. Using the method of Sato-Segal-Wilson theory [\textit{M. Sato}, Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 49, Pt. 1, 51--66 (1989; Zbl 0688.58016); \textit{G. Segal} and \textit{G. Wilson}, Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 61, 5--65 (1985; Zbl 0592.35112)], it was shown by the author and his collaborators in [\textit{M. J. Dupré} et al., Acta Appl. Math. 92, No.~3, 241--267 (2006; Zbl 1101.37048); Complex Anal. Oper. Theory 7, No.~4, 739--763 (2013; Zbl 1276.19005)] that there exists an associated \(C^*\)-algebra, aptly called the Burchnall-Chaundy \(C^*\)-algebra. Commencing with the relationship between a Baxter Lie algebra and Lax pairs, the author shows here that the Burchnall-Chaundy \(C^*\)-algebra naturally leads to an associated quasi-triangular Hopf \(C^*\)-algebra.
