Spaces dealt with in this paper are separable and metrizable. For each such space \(X\), one may deal with its covering dimension, dim\(X\), or its cohomological dimension over an abelian group \(G\), denoted dim\(_G X\). In [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 5, 219--235 (2005; Zbl 1081.55001)], \textit{M. Levin} proved the \(\mathbb{Q}\)-resolution theorem: if \(X\) is a compactum with dim\(_{\mathbb{Q}}X=n\), \(n\geq2\), then there exists a compactum \(Z\) with dim\(Z=n\) and a surjective \(\mathbb{Q}\)-acyclic map \(\pi:Z\to X\). The latter means that each fiber \(\pi^{-1}(x)\) has trivial reduced Čech cohomology with respect to the group \(\mathbb{Q}\). In this way there is established a certain correspondence between spaces of rational cohomological dimension \(n\geq2\) and those of the same covering dimension \(n\geq2\). The current paper produces a different relation. A Cantor group is a topological group that is homeomorphic to a Cantor set. We state the main result of the paper. Theorem 1.1. Let \(n\geq0\) be an integer and \(X\) be a compactum with dim\(_G X=n\). Then there is a compactum \(Z\) with dim\(Z=n\) and an action of a Cantor group \(\Gamma\) on \(Z\) such that \(X=Z/\Gamma\). Moreover, the action of \(\Gamma\) can be assumed to be free if \(n=1\).
