The authors show how the dynamics of a potential flow of an ideal compressible fluid can be obtained from the variational principle with the Lagrange function \[ L(\psi,\psi';\varrho)=\varrho (\psi'-\frac{1}{2}(\partial_{i}\psi)^2)-U(\varrho) \] where \(\varrho =\varrho(r,t) \) is the velocity potential. To study the problem of consistency of a pair of thermodynamic equation authors applied the technique of generalized Hamiltonian dynamics proposed by P. Dirac.
