The author considers a quadratic finite volume scheme over triangular meshes for second-order elliptic equations in two dimensions. The scheme is designed with the second degree Gauss points on the edges and the barycenters of the triangular elements. This is an attempt to shed some light on the stability analysis of the high-order finite volume schemes over triangular meshes. The novelty here is a new one-to-one mapping from the trial space to the test space; with this mapping, the author sets up an identity between the finite volume and finite element bilinear forms. As a consequence, the \(H^1\)-norm error of the finite volume solution is shown to converge with the optimal order.
