    Let \(M\) be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension \(m\). Let \(R>0\) and let \(\rho\) be the Ricci curvature. Let \(d\) be the diameter of \(M\) and let \(\lambda_ 1\) be the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian. The author establishes a lower bound for \(\lambda_ 1\); this estimate was conjectured by \textit{S. T. Yau} [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 8, 487--507 (1975; Zbl 0325.53039)]. Theorem. Suppose \(\rho\geq -R\). Then \(\lambda_ 1\geq (\pi^ 2/d^ 2) \exp (-C_ m\sqrt{Rd^ 2})\) where \(C_ m=\max (\sqrt{m-1},\sqrt{z}).\) Remark: The author also shows \(\lambda_ 1\geq (\omega^ 2/d^ 2)-R\).
