The authors establish an upper bound for the nilpotency degree of the generators in cyclotomic quotients of Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras. This implies the positive answer to a conjecture by \textit{J. Brundan} and \textit{A. Kleshchev}, [Invent. Math. 178, No. 3, 451-484 (2009; Zbl 1201.20004)]. The main idea of the proof is combinatorial and reduces to the study of bead and runner diagrams (which parameterize some combinatorial data of the KLR algebras) and their anti-gravity configurations.
