Let \(X\) be a smooth complex projective surface such that \(q(X)=0\). The \textit{Cox ring} \(R(X)\) of \(X\) is the direct sum of \(H^0(X, {\mathcal O}_X(D))\) for \(D \in \)Pic\((X)\). The paper under review studies the relation between the finite generation of \(R(X)\) and the anticanonical Iitaka dimension of \(X\). Two main results are presented. First: for a rational surface of Iitaca dimension equal to one, the equivalence of the following facts: rational polyhedrality of the effective cone, finite generation of \(R(X)\) and finiteness of the set of (\(-1\))-curves. Second: when the anticanonical bundle is nef, surfaces for which \(R(X)\) is finitely generated are completely classified.
