For a compact \(m\)-manifold \(M\) let Diff\(^r_0(M)\) be the identity component of the group of C\(^r\) diffeomorphisms of \(M\), \(1\leq r\leq\infty\). If \(m\geq 6\) is even and \(r\not=2m+1\) then Diff\(^r_0(M)\) is uniformly perfect, i.e., any element is a product of a bounded number of commutators. If in addition \(M\) is connected then Diff\(^r_0(M)\) is uniformly simple, i.e., for any \(f,g\in\) Diff\(^r_0(M)\), \(f\) may be written as a product of a bounded number of conjugates of \(g\) and \(g^{-1}\). The proof involves decomposing an isotopy into a bounded number of isotopies with controlled support. In either case, the bound depends on \(M\).
