Using the method of moving frames, the authors calculate the Brouwer degree of the gradient map of any isoparametric polynomial, thus solving a problem from 1978, due to \textit{J. Eells} and \textit{L. Lemaire} (see Zbl 0401.58003). They also give some application to harmonic maps.
