The authors study the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwell molecules. Using the Fourier representation they give a simplified proof of some results of \textit{H. Tanaka} [Wahrscheinlichkeitstheor. Verw. Geb. 46, 67-105 (1978; Zbl 0389.60079)]. By means of simple geometric properties it is proved that the Tanaka functional is an entropy decreasing functional for the Boltzmann equation for Maxwell molecules.
