\textit{S. Baaj} and \textit{P. Julg} [``Théorie bivariante de Kasparov et opérateurs non bornés dans les \(C^*\)-modules hilbertiens'', C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 296, 875-878 (1983; Zbl 0551.46041)] introduced the concept of an unbounded Kasparov module \((E, \varphi, D)\); for the set \(\Psi(A,B)\) of unbounded Kasparov modules over \(C^*\)-algebras \(A\) and \(B\) they showed that there is a natural surjection \(b\): \(\Psi(A,B)\to KK(A,B)\) and gave a simple formula for an external product \(\Psi(A_1,B_1) \otimes\Psi (A_2,B_2) \to\Psi (A_1 \otimes A_2,B_1 \otimes B_2)\) which they showed maps to the external Kasparov product under the surjection \(b\). The main purpose of this paper is to give sufficient conditions for an unbounded Kasparov module \((E_1 \otimes_{\varphi_2} E_2,\varphi_1 \otimes id,D) \in\Psi (A,C)\) to represent the Kasparov product of \((E_1,\varphi_1, D_1)\in \Psi(A,B)\) and \((E_2, \varphi_2, D_2) \in\Psi (B,C)\).
