Summary: This paper deals with the problem of the determination of the stress distribution for solids made of no-tension material. The explicit nonlinear constitutive relation is given for one-, two-, and three- dimensional cases. The elastostatic problem is then posed in strong and weak form, and variational conditions to impose on the load system in order to ensure the existence of solution are discussed. The finite- element formulation is developed and a numerical technique is proposed to solve the nonlinear problem. Numerical results are given for some simple two-dimensional structural schemes.
