The Benney system describing long waves on a free-surface shallow water is considered as the basic integrable system with two spatial variables. The moment version of this system \[ A_{n,t}=A_{n+1,x}+nA_{n- 1}A_{0,x} \] is known to have a Lax-type representation providing it with an infinite series of polynomial conserved densities. The author considers modified Benney flows and presents a general proof of commutativity of these flows which does not rely on Hamiltonian theory. The modified Benney system \[ a_{n,t}=a_{n+1,x}-a_ na_{0,x}+na_{n-1}(a_{1,x}-2a_ 0a_{0x}) \] is considered as a particular case of modification.
