In many physical phenomena such as plate tectonics and the buckling of a spherical shell, there are solutions with full spherical symmetry which lose stability as a particular parameter is varied. This loss of stability is due to the passage of eigenvalues through the imaginary axis. The difficulty in the analysis of steady-state bifurcation with O(3)-symmetry is that the multiplicity of eigenvalues passing through zero is only restricted to being an odd number. The authors state that the aim of the paper is to review important and recent results in bifurcation with O(3)-symmetry so that they are accessible in one paper, and to present several new results for which detailed proofs are given.
