The aim in this introductory presentation will be to outline a new possibility to modeling microstructures, microprocesses, and macroscopic response. There are three essential features of this program: (i) The basic structure and philosophy of continuum mechanics is adopted with appropriate generalizations in the balance laws and constitutive equations, (ii) The notion of excited and normal states is introduced, (iii) Non-monotonic curves modeling nonlinearity and multiplicity, such as curves with a single loop are utilized.
