A method for estimating partial derivatives in bivariate interpolation and smooth surface fitting for scattered data and its modification are reviewed from aspects of smooth changes of the estimated results with changes in datapoint configuration and invariance of results under certain types of linear coordinate transformations. Some modifications are accompanied by examples.
