Let H be a separable Hilbert space and \(e^{-A\sigma}\), \(\sigma\geq 0\), a strongly continuous semigroup on H. A proof is given of the following result of \textit{L. Gearhart} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 236, 385-394 (1978; Zbl 0326.47038)] which avoids his extensive use of model theory. Theorem. If \(e^{-A\sigma}\) is a contraction semigroup, then \(e^{-z}\) is in the resolvent set \(\rho(e^{-A})\) iff z is in \(\rho(A+2\pi in)\) for every integer n and \(\sup_{n}\|(A+2\pi in-z)^{- 1}\|<\infty\).
