A general iterative procedure for solving mixed, Lagrangian, finite element equations is introduced. The method allows a dramatic improvement in accuracy of simple, irreducible, formulations to be achieved in a few 'resolutions'. Applications to incompressible flow, stress analysis and metal forming problems are given. The procedures can be easily implemented into standard programs.
