The author uses algebraic means to study the structure of \(\ell\)-class groups \(C_ K(\ell)\) of certain algebraic number fields \(K\) where \(\ell\) is a prime not dividing the degree of the extension. The three types of extensions considered are: (i) \(K/k\) is an abelian extension with Galois group of type \((p,p)\), \(p\) prime; (ii) \(K={\mathbb Q}(p\sqrt{c},p\sqrt{d})\) where \(p\) is an odd prime and \([K:{\mathbb Q}]=p^ 2;\) (iii) \(K\) is a dihedral extension of degree \(2^{n+1}\) over \({\mathbb Q}.\) For the first case \textit{K. Ohta} [J. Math. Soc. Japan 30, No. 4, 763--770 (1978; Zbl 0389.12002)] has obtained similar results. In case (ii) it is shown that \(C_ K(\ell)\) is the direct product of \(C_{k_ 1}(\ell)\), \(C_{k_ 2}(\ell),\dots,C_{k_ p}(\ell)\) where \(k_ 1,k_ 2,\dots,k_ p\) are the subfields of \(K\) of degree \(p\) over \({\mathbb Q}\). For each of the three cases a class number relation is obtained for the part of the class number prime to p, where \(p=2\) in case (iii).
