[For part II see ibid. 21, No.1, 87-94 (1991; Zbl 0727.65024).] The author studies conjugate directions methods for arbitrary matrices. The methods are of a recursive type whereby a generalization is considered aiming to exclude divisors near or equal to zero. The paper brings some basic definitions concerning conjugate direction and generalized projections. On the basis of the obtained matrix form Hestenes-Stiefel and Lánczos type schemes are generated.
