It is shown that the number of irreducible complex character degrees of a normal subgroup \(N\) of a finite group \(G\) cannot be bounded by a function depending only on the number of irreducible complex character degrees of \(G\). Given an integer \(m>1\), a \(p\)-group \(G\) with normal subgroup \(N\) is constructed such that \(G\) resp. \(N\) has the irreducible complex character degrees \(\{1,p^ m\}\) resp. \(\{1,p,p^ 2,\dots,p^ m\}\).
