The author studies a linear positive contraction \(C_ 0\)-semigroup defined on an \(L^ 1\)-space and deduces a criterion which is useful in research of the following equations: 1. Linear Boltzman equation \[ (\partial f/\partial t)(\gamma,\nu,t)=- v(\partial f/\partial \gamma)(\gamma,\nu,t)- v(\nu)f(\gamma,\nu,t)+\int_{{\mathbb{R}}^ 3}K(\nu,\nu')f(\gamma,\nu',t)d\nu'. \] 2. The initial boundary-value problem of the cell growth equation \[ (\partial f/\partial t)+\nu (\partial f/\partial \mu)+R(\mu,\nu)f(\mu,\nu,t)=(Jf)(\mu,\nu,t), \] \[ f(0,\nu,t)=\frac{m}{\nu}\int^{\infty}_{0}K(\nu,\nu')\nu'f(1,\nu',t)d\nu',\quad f(\mu,\nu,0)=f_ 0(\mu,\nu). \] 3. The Kolmogorov differential equations \[ \frac{d}{dt}P_{ik}(t)=-P_{ik}(t)d_ k+\sum_{j}P_{ij}(t)b_{jk},\quad \frac{d}{dt}P_{ik}(t)=-d_ iP_{ik}(t)+\sum_{j}b_{ij}P_{jk}(t). \]
