The first major goal of this review paper is to clarify the genesis of a large number of contributions to the theoretical literature by associating them with one or the other theoretical approaches to BCS-BEC theory. These two theoretical schemes are different in the ground state and in their thermal properties. The next major purpose of this paper is to summarize the major strengths and weaknesses within the BCS-Leggett and Nozières-Schmitt-Rink theoretical schools.
