Recall that, a little vague, a smooth projective variety \(X \subset {\mathbb P}^n\) embedded by a complete linear system of a very ample line bundle is said to have the property \(N_p\) iff \(X\) is projectively normal and the first \(p\) syzygies of \(X\) are linear. The main result of this paper is that the isomorphic inner projections of a smooth \(X\) having property \(N_p\) has property \(N_{p-1}\). Applications and examples are given. Among these we mention the result firstly obtained by \textit{G. Ottaviani} and \textit{R. Paoletti} [Compos. Math. 125, No. 1, 31--37 (2001; Zbl 0999.14016)] that the Veronese embedding of \({\mathbb P}^n\) by monomials of degree \(d\) fails to have the property \(N_{3d-2}\).
