The authors prove that if \(X\) is a rearrangement invariant space on \([0,1]\), that is, an interpolation space between \(L_{1}\) and \(L_{\infty}\) and for which one has only a one-sided estimate of the Boyd index \(\alpha(X)>1/p\), \(1<p<\infty\), then \(X\) is an interpolation space between \(L_{1}\) and \(L_p\). This gives a positive answer to a question posed by E. M. Semenov and complements a related result of the second named author in [Stud. Math. 71, 69--83 (1981; Zbl 0496.46019)] on interpolation spaces between \(L_p\) and \(L_\infty\). Considering a slight modification of the Russu space, it is shown that the condition for \(X\) to be an interpolation space between \(L_1\) and \(L_\infty\) cannot be dropped. The authors also present a one-sided interpolation theorem about operators of strong type \((1,1)\) and weak type \((p,p)\), \(1<p<\infty\). The contents of this article can also be found in [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 132, 2929--2938 (2004; Zbl 1054.46017)] where the details of the proofs are given (here, only sketches of the proofs are given).
