Generalized complex structures were introduced by \textit{N. Hitchin} [Q. J. Math. Oxford 54, No. 3, 281-308 (2003; Zbl 1076.32019)]. In his Oxford thesis the second author developed the theory further. In the article under review the authors give a surgery construction for generalized complex surfaces (which smoothly is just a log transform earlier studied by \textit{R. E. Gompf} and \textit{T. S. Mrowka} [Ann. Math. 138, 63-111 (1993; Zbl 0805.57012)] and others in the smooth category). This surgery modifies a neighborhood of a symplectic 2-torus with trivial normal bundle in a symplectic 4-manifold to give a generalized complex structure on a related 4-manifold exhibiting type change along a 2-torus. One example using this construction starts with the elliptically fibered \(K3\) surface and performs this surgery along a smooth elliptic fiber to yield a generalized complex structure on \(3 \mathbb C \mathbb P^2 \# 19 \mathbb C \mathbb P^2.\) This manifold does not possess a symplectic structure or a complex structure.
