The author claims to give a deeper understanding of some results in coding theory concerning self dual codes. In order to establish this, he links self dual codes to certain subgroups of the ``diagonal'' special 2 group V(n) in Spin(n). By studying the structure of these subgroups of V, he is able to obtain new proofs for some known results on self dual codes found earlier by Pless and Sloane (the author's reference [16]). The classification of self dual codes (which was due to Pless) can be derived using some (deep) results of Borel and Quillen (References [4] and [17] of the paper).
