This short paper is an application of the identity by \textit{M. M. Chawla} and \textit{C. P. Katti} [J. Comput. Appl. Math. 6, 189-196 (1980; Zbl 0477.65061)] derived for a self-adjoint ordinary differential operator. Using this identity a difference scheme (which reduces in a special case to the Numerov method) for a singular boundary value problem is derived. A numerical illustration is given.
