Scalar and higher-dimensional equations with constant delay are considered, where the delay \( \tau\) is one parameter, and other parameters can depend on the delay. The main concern is to compute an expression for the derivative (w.r. to the delay) of the real part of eigenvalues crossing the imaginary axis, when a Hopf bifurcation occurs. This analytical part of the paper is combined with a numerical study of three examples. In particular, the relation between parameter values and the direction of the Hopf bifurcation is obtained.
