The first result of this paper is the following: Let \((Y, \rho) \) be a metric space, \(K_1\) and \(K_2\) be two nonempty compact subsets of \(Y\), \ \(V_1\) and \(V_2\) be two nonempty disjoint open subsets of \(Y\). If \(h(K_1,K_2) < \rho (V_1, V_2)\) then \(h(K_1, (K_1 - V_1) \cup (K_2 - V_2)) \leq h(K_1, K_2)\), where \(h\) is the Hausdorff metric. As applications, some existence theorems for essential components of solution sets for various nonlinear problems are given.
