The authors continue the study of the free associative algebra \(A=A_n\) with \(n\) generators, \(n\geq 2\), as a Lie algebra, initiated by \textit{B. Feigin} and \textit{B. Shoikhet} [Math. Res. Lett. 14, No. 5-6, 781-795 (2007; Zbl 1174.17020)]. They consider the lower central series \(L_1=A\), \(L_{m+1}=[A,L_m]\) and the associated graded Lie algebra \(B(A)=\bigoplus_mB_m(A)\), where \(B_m=L_m/L_{m+1}\). By a result of Feigin and Shoikhet \(B_m(A)\) is a module of the Lie algebra \(W_n\) of the polynomial vector fields on \(\mathbb{C}^n\). In the paper under review the authors state this result more precisely and show that the number of squares in a Young diagram corresponding to an irreducible \(W_n\)-module of the Jordan-Hölder series of \(B_m(A)\) is bounded linearly from above. The vector spaces \(B_m(A)\) are \(\mathbb{Z}\)-graded and for \(m\geq 2\) the dimension of the homogeneous component \(B_m[d]\) grows as a polynomial in \(d\) of degree \(n-1\). Now the authors bound the leading coefficient of the Hilbert polynomial of these homogeneous components. As applications, they confirm conjectures of Etingof and Shoikhet concerning the structure of the third graded component \(B_3(A)\).
