    The paper under review studies the mod 2 cohomology of orbit spaces of free involutions. The main results of the paper are the following two theorems: Theorem 1. Let \(G={\mathbb Z}_2\) act freely on a finitistic space \(X\) having the same mod 2 cohomology algebra as \({\mathbb R}P^n\times {\mathbb R}P^m\), \(1\leq n\leq m\). Then \(H^*(X/G;{\mathbb Z}_2)\) is isomorphic to one of the following graded algebras: {\parindent5mm \begin{itemize}\item[1.] \({\mathbb Z}_2[x,y,z]/\langle x^2, y^{{n+1}\over{2}}, z^{m+1}\rangle\), where \(\deg(x)=1, \deg(y)=2, \deg(z)=1\) and \(n\) is odd; \item[2.] \({\mathbb Z}_2[x,y,z]/\langle x^2, y^{n+1}, z^{{m+1}\over 2}\rangle\), where \(\deg(x)=1, \deg(y)=1, \deg(z)=2\) and \(m\) is odd; \item[3.] \({\mathbb Z}_2[x,y,z, w]/\langle x^2, y^{{n+1}\over{2}}, z^{{m+1}\over 2}, w^2-axw-by-cz\rangle\), where \(\deg(x)=1, \deg(y)=2, \deg(z)=2\) and \(a,b, c\in{\mathbb Z}_2\) and \(n, m\) are odd. \end{itemize}} Theorem 2. Let \(G={\mathbb Z}_2\) act freely on a finitistic space \(X\) having the same mod 2 cohomology algebra as \({\mathbb C}P^n\times {\mathbb C}P^m\), \(1\leq n\leq m\). Then \(H^*(X/G;{\mathbb Z}_2)\) is isomorphic to one of the following graded algebras:{\parindent5mm \begin{itemize}\item[1.] \({\mathbb Z}_2[x,y,z]/\langle x^3, y^{{n+1}\over{2}}, z^{m+1}\rangle\), where \(\deg(x)=1, \deg(y)=4, \deg(z)=2\) and \(n\) is odd; \item[2.] \({\mathbb Z}_2[x,y,z]/\langle x^3, y^{n+1}, z^{{m+1}\over 2}\rangle\), where \(\deg(x)=1, \deg(y)=2, \deg(z)=4\) and \(m\) is odd; \item[3.] \({\mathbb Z}_2[x,y,z, w]/\langle x^3, y^{{n+1}\over{2}}, z^{{m+1}\over 2}, w^2-ax^2w-by-cz\rangle\), where \(\deg(x)=1, \deg(y)=4, \deg(z)=4\) and \(a,b, c\in{\mathbb Z}_2\) and \(n, m\) are odd. \end{itemize}}
