Univariate modified Fourier series were introduced by \textit{A. Iserles} and \textit{S. P. Nørsett} [IMA J. Numer. Anal. 28, No. 4, 862--887 (2008; Zbl 1221.65348)] as an adjustment of Fourier series. Combined with modern quadrature methods to evaluate the coefficients, the benefit of using such series to approximate a nonperiodic function is a faster convergence rate; even the convergence is uniform and there is no Gibbs phenomenon on the boundary. These series and quadrature methods were generalized to Cartesian product domains by also \textit{A. Iserles} and \textit{S. P. Nørsett} [IMA J. Numer. Anal. 29, No. 4, 882--916 (2009; Zbl 1188.65149)]. The aim of the present paper is twofold. First, it provides convergence analysis for modified Fourier series in various norms using both full and hyperbolic cross index sets. Second it demonstrates that these series can be used in the spectral Galerkin approximation of second order Neumann boundary value problems, which offers some advantages over the standard. Chebyshev or Legendre polynomial discretizations.
