In the first part of the paper, the author gives an introduction to the Conley index. Then he applies it to a three-dimensional and a five-dimensional singularly perturbed autonomous system with one slow variable which model bursting activity in pancreatic \(\beta\)-cells. He proves the existence of a nonempty attractor and a periodic orbit for both models.
