The authors establish for abstract dynamical systems the existence of a \({\mathcal D}\)-attractor, which is the pullback attractor for a given class \({\mathcal D}\) of families of time varying subsets of the phase space. The introduced attractor is compared with the usual attractor of fixed bounded sets and it is proved that these two notions of attractors generate the same object. Applications to Navier-Stokes equations are given.
