Let \(H\) and \(K\) be complex Hilbert spaces and \(A\) be a closed densely defined operator from \(H\) to \(K\) with domain \(D(A)\). Motivated by the theory of extremal extensions of positive operators, the authors obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a proper closed densely defined suboperator of \(A\) with domain containing a given subspace of \(D(A)\). More precisely, if \(L\) is a subspace of \(D(A)\) such that the restriction \(A|L\) is closed, then there exists a subspace \(L_1\) of \(D(A)\) such that \(L\subseteq L_1\subsetneq D(A)\) and \(A|L_1\) is closed and densely defined if and only if \(X\equiv(D(A)\ominus_A L)\setminus D(A^*A)\) is nonempty, where \[ D(A)\ominus_A L= \{x\in D(A):\langle x,y\rangle+ \langle Ax,Ay\rangle= 0\text{ for all }y\in L\} \] (Theorem 3.5). Moreover, in this case, the suboperators \(A|L_1\) with codimension-one domains are explicitly described, namely, there is a bijection between all one-dimensional subspaces \(M\) of \(X\) and all subspaces \(L_1\) \((=D(A)\ominus_A M)\) with \(\dim D(A)/L_1= 1\) and the above restriction property (Theorem 3.6).
